Theresa Martinez
Professor
Martinez teaches courses in racial and ethnic relations, deviant
behavior and juvenile delinquency. Her research and most recent
publication include work on the topics of race, class and gender,
delinquency, and popular culture. Professor Martinez has won several
teaching awards including the Distinguished University Teaching
Award, the College Superior Teaching Award, the Presidential Teaching
Scholar Award, and the Top Professor Award from the Mortar Board
Society.
In addition, Professor Martinez has won the YWCA Leadership Award
for Education, and the national Delta Gamma Foundation Faculty
Award. Professor Martinez has been appointed to the Board of the
Division of Youth Corrections and is currently on the Board of
the Salt Lake Legal Defenders.
Dr. Martinez has been asked to speak at Mount Holyoke College
and the Louisiana State Governors Conference on Juvenile Justice
as well as for many and varied local community groups and organizations
including Centro de la Familia de Utah, the Salt Lake Gang Conference,
the State Office of Education, Judge Memorial High School, Girls
Observation and Assessment, the Division of Youth Corrections,
Bryant Intermediate School, Decker Lake Youth Facility, and Wasatch
Youth Center.
Professor Martinez has provided diversity training for the Utah State Drivers License Division, the Salt Lake County Drug Court, the Girl Scouts of Utah, and the Salt Lake Legal Defenders. Currently, Professor Martinez is the Diversity Trainer for Juvenile Probation, the Salt Lake Police Department, and the Utah State Bar. Professor Martinez has appeared on 20/20: News Magazine and was featured in Time Magazine.
