Health Sciences Bookstore Manager Melanie Hall knows how expensive
college is for students. "I'm reminded almost every day when
I put the price tags on the books," she says. "That's
part of the reason I feel compelled to help if I can." And
help she does. Melanie is one of many University of Utah employees
who make contributions to the U through payroll deduction or
outright gifts.
"We call it the Partners In Excellence program," says Jeff Driggs, director of Annual Giving, of the on-campus effort to encourage gifts from university employees. "And more and more of us are stepping up to help."
It's easy for Ms. Hall to see the benefits of her payroll giving, which she earmarks for the Bookstore Scholarship: one of this year's scholarship recipients is her part-time co-worker, Cameron Meyer, a junior majoring in computer science. "To know my colleagues are contributing some of their own, hard-earned dollars to help students like me means a lot," he says. "It makes me a better student - and a better employee!"
